Projects and Programs : Scholarship Fund The Nova Scotia Salmon Association (NSSA) annually grants two $500.00 scholarships to individuals participating in either academic or fish habitat restoration initiatives. The 2003 recipients are attending Acadia University.

“This year the Scholarship Committee was extremely pleased with the quality and the number of submissions for consideration. The hard part for the Committee was to choose two recipients when in reality every submission was worthy of our financial support because they are all adding to the body of information that will further enable us to address many of our freshwater salmon and trout concerns”, says NSSA president David Reid.

The NSSA had set a goal to raise the scholarship fund to $20,000.00 and according to Reid, that goal has been met. “We just recently surpassed our financial goal and I think our membership has to be extremely proud of the fact that they are becoming a bigger player by being able to financially support our students in their academic and in-river pursuits. The scholarship will continue to develop into a great partnership with our universities and affiliates and really illustrates the diversity of the NSSA and its commitment to education ” concludes Reid.

Dr. Harris Miller, Honorary Chair of the 2004 Scholarship fund raising campaign, announces the 2004 recipients of the Nova Scotia Salmon Association Scholarships.

Dear NSSA  Member,

It is my pleasure, as Honorary Chair of this year’s scholarship fund raising campaign, to announce to you the 2004 recipients of the Nova Scotia Salmon Association Scholarships.

Mr. Aaron Spares is in his final year of a three-year Masters of Science program at Acadia University. Aaron is researching the trans-Atlantic migration of Atlantic salmon using bio-accumulated Cs-137 in Atlantic salmon returning to their birth river. Results of this research may alter current management and conservation policies especially those regulating high seas fisheries.

Ms. Julie Ann Cameron is from Lower Sackville and is presently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program at Guelph University. Julie was an active volunteer with the Sackville Rivers Association under the Environmental Leadership Program which is a cross-cultural exchange between Canada and Costa Rica. Julie was instrumental in hosting public education sessions, stream side signage program at Harvey’s Brook, administering in-stream restoration on both the Sackville and Little Sackville Rivers, participated in fish trap monitoring, water temperature monitoring and fish scale processing with Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Mr. Spares and Ms. Cameron will receive a cheque for $500.00 from the Nova Scotia Salmon Association.

This year the 50/50 Christmas Lotto has established a goal of raising $3,000.00 By purchasing the enclosed tickets, your financial support will continue to enhance our ability to promote research and freshwater restoration in areas we feel will secure a bright future for Atlantic salmon and Trout in Nova Scotia.

As well, as the year comes to an end, our charitable donor status enables us to provide generous supporters with an income tax receipt. I ask you, as a friend of the Atlantic salmon, to make a donation to the scholarship and to approach a fellow angler or corporate friend to consider making a financial contribution.

The Nova Scotia Salmon Association Scholarship has been awarded since 1991 and we should be proud of the fact that not only are we a leading volunteer conservation organization, we are also a strong leader in supporting education through in-stream field work, public awareness and academic pursuits.

Please join me in congratulating both Aaron Spares and Julie Ann Cameron as the 2004 recipients of the Nova Scotia Salmon Association Scholarship.

As Honorary Chair, I ask for your continued financial support in meeting our campaign goal of $3,000.00.

As well, I offer my personal wishes for a festive holiday season, good health and prosperity in the New Year.

Most sincerely,

Dr. Harris Miller
